I’m super excited about today’s featured blogger. Whether you frequent her blog, know her personally, or have just heard of her in passing—if you are a member of the blogging community, then you know who Theta Mom is. I can’t remember how I discovered Heather’s blog or when I discovered it; but ever since then, I’ve been a huge fan of her blog and her mission. She’s successful in all areas of social media and is the epitome of what “branding” your blog can do for you. I’m so excited that she’s agreed to be a part of this series. Here is her interview:
For those who don’t know you, could you tell us a little bit about yourself and your blog?
I was a full-time teacher for many years before I made the decision to stay home with my kids. After the birth of my second child, I soon began to work from home but it wasn’t long before I experienced lots of self-doubt and loneliness as a WAHM. Although I was still working hard and
contributing to the family income, I still felt caught between two different worlds; somewhere between the steadfast career that I left behind and the “new” woman trying to find herself with the role of mother added to her resume. I knew there had to be other women experiencing the same things that I was going through which is the moment I began my blog.
What was it that made you decide to start writing? Was it something you’d always wanted to do, or was it just a happen by accident?
I always loved to write which is one of the major reasons of why I started my blog. I knew I wanted to connect with other women that were experiencing the same things that I was going through, but I also wanted to write – I mean, just WRITE. This has been a passion of mine since as long as I can remember.
When it comes to your writing, where do you draw your inspiration?
For me, inspiration comes in a variety of ways; sometimes, it’s simply living in the moment that generates an idea for a post or an experience that I recall that I know would translate well to other mothers reading. Sometimes, I’ll just be inspired by a comment left by a reader on my own blog that can spur into a post.
We know that *Theta Mom* stands for ‘The True Authentic Mom’ but exactly how did that idea come about & how have you built it into a brand for yourself?
I noticed when I began blogging there were many bloggers who were only sharing the “fabulous” side of motherhood and didn’t provide the realistic version of this job. I wanted to get to the core of motherhood and talk openly about the good AND the bad, serving as a sounding board or outlet
to discuss our struggles. Let’s face it, motherhood isn’t easy. I’ve covered many topics on my blog that have started some amazing discussions.
When you first began blogging, what blogging techniques did you use to set yourself apart from all of the other “mommy bloggers” out there?
For me, I wanted a design that I knew would be easily recognized and in part, I think that goes back to branding. I also knew I wanted bright colors to ensure that my blog was an inviting space. I know this sounds probably redundant, but content is king. So I always make sure my writing
is up to par and I don’t post anything unless it is worth reading. I don’t ever post just for the sake of posting.
Was there ever a time you thought about quitting? What stopped you?
I never thought of quitting but there have been a few times when I thought of taking a short bloggy break but never acted on it. I think most bloggers don’t realize the time and sheer dedication required to maintain a successful blog when they first enter this world. Any time I’ve stressed
about my blog I know it’s time to take a step back and re-evaluate because this journey should always remain enjoyable and fun. In this process, I once again establish the purpose for my blog and what I want out of this experience and then I make some time management decisions that I can live with – without the whole thing stressing me out.
What’s your secret to managing a successful blog and business, a home, and your family?
I wish I had the magic bullet to share, but I don’t. My number one priority is my family and that will never change. They will always come before my blog. Having said that, I do have to make some sacrifices to keep moving forward. This means that during much of own “down” time, I am usually working so this is the constant tug of war I experience trying to balance it all.
Who inspires you creatively? Which bloggers do you read daily and admire?
I can’t narrow this down to just a few! There are so many blogs I read for various reasons; some make me laugh, some entertain, and some just know how to bring out real and raw emotion – each has their own place in the blogosphere so I read many different blogs for different reasons. As long as the content is superb and the website is easy to navigate, I’m sold.
How important is social media to your blog? Why should it play such a viable role to other moms who are trying to grow their blogs into something more successful?
I think the key to a successful blog is really knowing WHO YOU ARE and translating this to your audience. Especially if you work (or want to work) with brands, your audience needs to have a high level of trust when you are making endorsements. This holds true for an online presence on
your own site as well as throughout social media. Social media is a wonderful platform for bloggers to make those connections with their audience but at the end of the day, the blogger really needs to stay true to who they are. Indefinitely.
Heather has written several posts on Social Media, Building your Following, and how to prevent a bloggy burnout. She can also be found on Twitter and Facebook. I highly encourage you—if you are a new blogger, or a blogger who’s just looking for good information and a great read—to head over to Theta Mom.
Hope you guys have a wonderful Tuesday!
